WTC Final: Injuries are a part and parcel of the sport. But IPL 2023 have been making the headlines from it’s opening days with a considerable number of players being ruled out of the tournament owing to injuries. With injuries taking a toll on all the teams and the ICC World Cup on the horizon, the BCCI has been put on alert about the workload management of some of the top players of the Indian National Team. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal went on to urge players to follow Virat Kohli’s example in injury & workload management. Follow WTC Finals & Indian Premier League 2023 LIVE Updates on InsideSport.IN

Speaking to the Indian Express, Arun Dhumal went on to clarify that injuries are an integral part of any sport. When questioned whether it is fair by BCCI to ask the IPL team owners to control the workload of the top players, Dhumal clarified that playing in IPL and making money has made people suspect the players.

He also explained that the BCCI and the NCA are working closely with the targeted players for the WTC Finals. Dhumal went on to explain that the players should look up to Virat Kohli as to how he keeps himself fit and treats himself during injuries and workload management.

“The problem in our country is that whosoever makes money, be it a company or individual, he is seen with suspicion. Virat Kohli has been playing IPL for so many years, he’s never been injured. Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami never got injured. Does it have anything to do with the IPL? At the same time, you have Raj Angad Bawa getting injured. He’s played IPL,” said Dhumal to the Indian Express.

One of the biggest misses in IPL 2023 from the Indian contingent is Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah. Both the players have/are suffering from back issues. The KKR skipper has decided to get a surgery on his back, which rules him out of the IPL and WTC finals. Further more, with the proper recovery and rehabilitation, Iyer is doubtful for the World Cup squad.

“Shreyas Iyer got injured but not because of the IPL. Just because they make money through IPL, we start blaming IPL for anything and everything. Injuries are an integral part of any sport. Our badminton stars are getting injured. They don’t play in the IPL. There are so many stars who are coming from overseas and playing in the IPL. They have not given an excuse that IPL is responsible for their injury. So we have to get out of this mindset,” Dhumal added.

The IPL chairman went on to put a major emphasis on players needing to improve their fitness levels. Dhumal revealed that the players should get disciplined more to retain their fitness to the top most level.

“They need to improve their fitness levels. We have seen stars who have become so disciplined because they know that they need to work hard and retain their fitness level for any format. In case we have to see longevity for a cricketer, they will have to make a choice. Either keep playing every format, every game for a few years or rest for some matches and make a long career. Jimmy Anderson is an example for so many players. At this age, the kind of bowling he is doing and the amount of wickets he has taken, it’s phenomenal.”

Another major concern that has arisen in the previous days is the workload management of the top Indian players who will be a part of the WTC Finals squad for India. According to reports, the players have been asked not to bowl too many overs in the risk of extering too much fatigue prior to the big final.

“Definitely, National Cricket Academy (NCA) is working very closely with all the franchises. We have already identified the players who’ll be needed for the World Cup. Accordingly, they are speaking to all the respective captains and franchise owners. They all have been sounded out about the fact that the World Cup is a prestigious tournament and since India is the host, we need to see their workload,” Dhumal Concluded.
