Following a humiliating 3-0 series loss to New Zealand, India’s Test squad, led by Rohit Sharma, is setting sights on their challenging upcoming series in Australia. This assignment is crucial as India seeks to secure their spot in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) Final in London. To remain in contention, India must now win at least four of the matches against Australia, making this a pivotal tour in their WTC campaign.
Strategic Shift in preparation for India
The Indian team had originally scheduled a three-day practice match against India A ahead of the first Test in Perth, but Rohit Sharma confirmed a change of plans. The team has opted instead for a “match simulation” with India A, an approach aimed at giving the batters maximum time in the middle to adjust to Australian conditions.
“Rather than a practice match, we planned a very match-simulation kind of thing with India A,” Rohit explained. “Sometimes in practice games, if a batter gets out, he has to sit out for the rest of the day. In simulations, though, we can maximise the time with each player batting 50-70 balls or even more, allowing them to truly settle in.”
He further elaborated on the importance of this approach, which will allow both batters and bowlers to acclimatise to Australian conditions with customised intensity and flexibility. Training is set to take place at the WACA ground, known for its fast and bouncy pitches, closely resembling conditions at Perth’s Optus Stadium where the first Test will be held.
Runs needed from Senior Players
Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli faced a lean series in New Zealand, a performance that has sparked concern within the team. Rohit acknowledged the lack of runs from senior players, including himself, as a key area needing improvement. “It’s a cause of concern without a doubt. If the batters are not performing, that’s worrying. But what’s done is done. We have to look forward to the opportunities ahead and see how we can correct what we missed in New Zealand.”
The captain is also hopeful for a resurgence from Kohli, who showed glimpses of form with a 70-run score in Bengaluru but struggled in other innings. “We’re all focused on putting in the work needed to succeed in Australia,” Rohit added, emphasising the high stakes of the tour.
India’s Test Squad for Australia
India’s squad for the Australia series is packed with talent and depth. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah will serve as vice-captain, bringing his experience in Australian conditions to support the team’s effort. The line-up also includes young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Abhimanyu Easwaran, while experienced all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be key to tackling Australia’s challenging pitches.

Remaining World Test Championship Fixtures
The Australia tour is not only critical for India’s immediate success but also for their standing in the WTC. With a history of strong performances in Test cricket, this tour could set the tone for India’s run toward the final. As Rohit noted, “There’s a good opportunity for us to do something special in Australia.”
With rigorous preparation and a strong focus on overcoming their recent challenges, India’s hopes remain high as they enter this high-stakes series. The cricket world will be watching as the team strives to deliver a strong performance down under.
