WPL Logo: The historic day has finally arrived as the women cricketers go under the hammer in the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. Ahead of the start of the auction, BCCI President Roger Binny, secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal unveiled the logo of the WPL 2023. The auction is currently underway in Mumbai. The logo represents a silhouette of a female cricketer with a swinging bat with the tournament’s name written next to it. Speaking about the historic day Binny said, “It’s a landmark today for women’s cricket as we begin a new journey. The Women’s Premier League is going to change the landscape of women’s cricket,”.

He added, “Interest that women’s cricket has garnered is overwhelming. Hope the players are going to go under the hammer are as excited as us. There will be domestic players as well who will be hoping to make a mark for their franchise and eventually for their countries as well. We have seen unheard talents becoming household names in the men’s league. Hopefully that is what happens in the WPL as well.”

Details about WPL auction 

A total of 448 players have made it to the final auction list. 270 of them are Indians. But the 5 newly drafted WPL Teams can only pick a maximum of 90 players from the pool. These 5 teams will shower 12 CRORE each to build their squads for WPL 2023. A team can pick a maximum of 18 players. 

What is the HIGHEST Base Price? The highest bracket at the auction will be INR 50 Lakh. Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and 8 others from India are in the same bracket. Overall 24 players are in the HIGHEST BASE BRACKET of 50 Lakhs. In the next category, INR 40 lakh, there are 30 players, including eight from India.

What will be the size of the WPL Squad? A maximum of 90 slots can be filled. The squads will be of a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 18 players.

What will be the foreign players LIMIT in the squad? Each team can have up to six overseas players. This means the inaugural season of WPL will witness a maximum of 30 foreigners & 60 Indians.

Incentive of Picking player from Associate Nation: 8 Players in the Auction POOL are from Associate Nations. But to pick one of these 8 will come with an incentive scheme. Like IPL, Teams can field four overseas players in their XIs. But they will be allowed to include fifth overseas player, provided she is from an Associate nation.
