WPL Auction 2023: Women’s Premier League 2023 –  The WPL auction list has finally been announced by the BCCI. The auction is set to take place at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur and U19 T20 World Cup-winning skipper Shafali Verma will be among the biggest stars to have registered themselves in the highest bracket of Rs 50 lakh rupees. Notably, in the list of 409 players, only 24 players chose to be registered in the highest bracket. However, there are 15 all-rounders in the 50 lakhs bracket, taking inspiration from IPL 2023 mini-auction where all-rounders were sold at very high prices. The auction is set to happen at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai on February 13 beginning at 02:30 pm (IST). The inaugural season of the marquee event will be played from March 4 to 26. Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium will be the two venues that will host 22 matches of this tournament.

WPL Auction 2023:

  • A total of 1525 players registered themselves for the upcoming auction.
  • Only 409 were shortlisted. 
  • 246 Indian players and 163 overseas players. 
  • The total number of capped players is 202.
  • Uncapped players are 199 and 8 from associate nations.

From the list of 409 players, only 90 will be picked by the five teams set to participate in the inaugural season of the WPL. With 30 of those slots being reserved for overseas cricketers.

The highest reserve price for a player is set at Rs 50 Lakh. Alongside Harmanpreet and Shafali, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma also registered themselves in the Rs 50 Lakh bracket. The top bracket also includes 14 overseas players, like Australia’s Ellyse Perry, England’s Sophie Ecclestone, New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, and West Indies’ Deandra Dottin. Meanwhile, 30 players have registered themselves at a base price of Rs 40 Lakh.

Taking inspiration from IPL 2023 mini-auction, where all-rounders were paid big prices, in WPL’s auction list all-rounders are clearly dominating in the highest bracket. In the IPL 2023 mini-auction, England’s all-rounder Sam Curran was bought by Punjab Kings for a whopping 18.5 crore rupees. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green was bought by Mumbai Indians at 17.5 crore rupees and Chennai Super Kings gave 16.25 crore rupees for star all-rounder Ben Stokes.
