WPL 2024: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to take the Women’s Premier League out of IPL’s shadow. A source close to BCCI has confirmed that the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be played in the home-away format from the next edition onwards with a bigger window. Notably, the Indian board is also mulling over having a Diwali window for the Women’s T20 tournament. The board reportedly wants to have a gap between the IPL and WPL. If BCCI goes ahead with the new time window, the tournament might clash with Pakistan Women’s League which is set to begin in September.
Notably, the WPL 2023 was held in Mumbai from March 4-26 across two venues. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had earlier confirmed that WPL would remain a five-team tournament for the next three seasons and be staged in the home and away format in order to build fan bases.
The WPL, which was launched in March 2022, features five teams – Gujarat Giants, Royal Challengers Bangalore, UP Warrioz, Delhi Capitals, and Mumbai Indians. The league was a massive success in its first season, with the stadiums getting jam-packed in Mumbai.
The BCCI source, however, is also discussing postponing the WPL to later in the year, around Diwali, but a final decision is yet to be taken.
Notably, Mumbai Indians were the champions of the inaugural season of the WPL. They defeated Delhi Capitals comfortably to lift the prestigious title.
