It was a dream come true moment for Sajeeven Sajana in WPL 2024 opener as she smashed a maximum on the last ball of the match and win the game for her side. Sajeevan Sajana went unsold in WPL 2023 auction but was bagged by Mumbai Indians for the ongoing edition. Hailing from Mananthavady in Wayanad, Kerala, Sajana’s father Sajeevan is an auto rickshaw driver and her mother Sarada Sajeevan is a municipality councillor.
Sajana’s cricket started by playing with plastic bat and coconut petiole and the game remained a mode of entertainment for her until a physical education teacher asked her to take up cricket seriously.
She also has a degree in Political Science and featured in a Tamil film as a support artist. She was also the football captain of Wayanad district in Kerala in her teenage years, and a track-and-field champion in college before she turned to cricket after the age of 18.
Speaking about her domestic career, Sajana has led Kerala under-23 team to T20 Super League title in 2019. She was also declared the women cricketer of the year in 2015 and 2017 from Kerala Cricket Association. In the 2023 Senior Women’s T20 Trophy 2023, she scored 134 runs in seven innings and took six wickets.
Ahead of new edition of WPL, Sajeevan Sajana was purchased by Mumbai Indians for INR 10 lakhs as she has already started to pay dividends to the MI women camp. It remains to be seen if Sajana can impress with her hitting abilities further in the tournament.
