The Women’s Premier League (WPL) second edition is nearing its end, with the ultimate showdown, WPL 2024 Final set to be played between Delhi Capitals Women and Royal Challengers Bangalore Women at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. Delhi secured their spot in the final by topping the points table, while the Smriti Mandhana-led side claimed the second position after triumphing over Mumbai Indians Women in the Eliminator.
Throughout the tournament, the WPL has garnered significant attention, drawing large crowds of enthusiastic fans to support women’s cricket. The initial phase held in Bengaluru received an overwhelmingly positive response, with most matches witnessing near-capacity attendance and tickets selling out well in advance.
Delhi Metro extends service for WPL 2024 Final
Recognizing the importance of facilitating fan access, organizers and franchises have collaborated with local public transport operators. In anticipation of the high turnout for the final at Kotla, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRCL) has teamed up with Delhi Capitals to extend metro operational hours, ensuring convenient transportation for spectators.
Metro services, being the lifeline of the capital, are essential for daily commuting. Extending operational hours is a crucial step considering the anticipated rush at metro stations near Kotla after the game. Delhi Capitals took to social media to announce the initiative, emphasizing hassle-free travel for fans, who are integral to the game.
In Bengaluru, where more than 25,000 fans commuted daily to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, public transport was the preferred mode of travel. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) extended metro services until 1.30 am, accommodating fans attending late-night fixtures.
As anticipation builds for the final, both teams are eager to clinch victory. Meg Lanning’s side aims to secure their first championship title after a close defeat in the 2023 finals, while RCB’s women seek to make history in their inaugural final appearance, a feat their male counterparts have yet to achieve in the IPL’s 17-year history.
