The BCCI has set the ball rolling with Mumbai set to face Gujarat Giants in the first-ever Women’s IPL match in history. With just over a month to go before the tournament, Cricbuzz reports that the Indian cricket board has informed the relevant authorities of the same. The tournament as reported earlier by Insidesport, will be held from March 4-26 in Mumbai.
Mumbai will take on Ahmedabad in the first match of the season. Delhi, Bangalore and Lucknow will all be in action on day 2 of the tournament. The tentative schedule sees Bangalore face Delhi, while Ahmedabad will take on Lucknow. The opener however will generate huge interest given their owners.
Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance owns the Mumbai team, while Gautam Adani’s Adani Sportline are the owners of the Gujarat Giants. The two business tycoons are the two richest people in India and among the richest in the world. Ambani recently pipped his rival to become the richest Asian after Adani suffered a rare defeat, and, also scrapped Follow-on-Public Offer (FPO) on Wednesday.
WPL 2023 Schedule: Talking points
- Mukesh Ambani’s Mumbai to face Gautam Adani’s Gujarat in the season opener on March 4.
- The tournament will be played at the DY Patil and Brabourne Stadium.
- The Wankhede Stadium is RESTED ahead of the IPL, IND vs AUS ODI
- There will only be one eliminator, with the table topper reaching the final.
- The Eliminator will be played on March 24, and the WPL Final to be held on March 26.
Meanwhile, the BCCI have confirmed the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai and the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai as the two venues for the WPL. As previously reported, the Indian board considered holding the tournament at a solitary venue to decrease the workload. The players will be returning from the T20 World Cup in SouthAfrica before the 1st ever Women’s IPL.
The Wankhede Stadium, in proximity to the Brabourne Stadium, was omitted. The venue of the 2011 World Cup Final, was left out for the India vs Australia on March 17. Mumbai Indians will also play their home games at the venue during the IPL 2023.
Meanwhile, unlike the IPL, the BCCI has scrapped the playoffs format for the WPL. With the Women’s IPL only being a five-team league, the new format sees the top team directly qualify for the final. The teams placed second and third will battle in a single knockout fixture to determine the second finalist. The Eliminator will be played on March 24 at the Brabourne Stadium. The WPL 2023 Final will be held on March 26 at the DY Patil Stadium.
