The BCCI has taken the step to shorter the boundary in the first season of WPL. This decision was taken in order to have a high-scoring game and to see some hard-hitting at the end of the innings, which can gain the interest of the spectators. The boundary ropes for the inaugural match between Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians have pulled in accordingly at the DY Patil Stadium.

Meanwhile, in the opening game of the inaugural edition, Mumbai Indians’ Hayley Matthew slammed four sixes, the most by a batter while making 47 off 31. Eight sixes were hit during the game, in which Mumbai smashed 6 sixes in their inning and Gujarat only manages to hit two sixes. For Gujarat, both sixes were smacked by Dayalan Hemalatha.

In the game, while batting first Mumbai Indians posted a humongous total of 207 runs. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur was the top-scorer, who smashed 65 off just 30 deliveries. Her inning includes 14 boundaries. Chasing the target Gujarat Titans were bowled out on 64 runs and lost the game by 143 runs.

Opening ceremony of WPL

The primary performers at the opening ceremony included rapper AP Dhillon, Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani. When Dhillon took the stage, the DY Patil Stadium, which has a capacity of 55,000, was just halfway full. Yet, by the time the first innings of the debut game started, there were fewer spectators present.

Some of the people who made their way to the departure gates after Dhillon’s approximately 15-minute performance claimed they had come to the stadium specifically to listen to him.

The maximum on ticket pricing was Rs 100, but the DY Patil ticket office didn’t open until the day before the final game. Nonetheless, WPL tickets were available online.
