“Meg Lanning is not surprising. We had obviously expected that the team might be built around her. But I am surprised with both Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney. We felt Deepti Sharma might be the captain for the UP Warriorz,” Veda said on JioCinema.

- Veda feels Deepti would have handled the India players better than Healy since language could not have been the barrier for the all-rounder.
- The former batter believes Indian players are the ones to take the league forward, and a India captain would have been ideal.
Veda also expressed surprise over Mooney being the leader of GG as the built-up was around Ash Gardner. GG did not target any of the big Indian players in the auction and went for lesser-known players.
“When the auction ended, we knew for a fact that the Gujarat Giants were more focused on overseas and didn’t go for an Indian captain. So it was expected that they will have an overseas captain but it was slightly surprising that it is Beth Mooney because the build-up was around Ash Gardner.”
The WPL 2023 season will kick off on March 4 with Mumbai Indians playing Gujrat Giants at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai. Ahead of the match, BCCI have planned a grand opening ceremony, with the like of AP Dhillon, Kiara Advani, and Kriti Sanon performing.
