Women’s T20 World Cup: India prioritising on mental strength to overcome ICC Final hurdle

India will start their campaign on October 4 against New Zealand in Dubai.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s Indian cricket team are preparing for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. Still in the hunt for the maiden ICC trophy, the Women in Blue are going into the multi-nation as one of the favourite. Having played in 20 World Cups since 1978, the silverware continues to escape their reach. This time, Team India would look to end that drought.

Placed alongside Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Group A, the journey to the semifinal won’t be easy. But the real challenge begins afterward. Just thrice has India reached the final of an ICC World Cup and lost each time. Harmanpreet Kaur feels that what stands between them and the elusive trophy is how they handle the pressure moments.

“We have been working on mental strength for a long time. The last 3-4 overs are the most crucial. T20 cricket is not a small format; at the end of the day, you are playing 40 overs. In the last 4-5 overs, the team that is mentally strong wins the match. We have been focusing on this for a while. If we can remain mentally stable in those final 5 overs, we can execute what’s best for us. We are working on those aspects, and hopefully, we will overcome this hurdle in the tournament,” Harmanpreet told Star Sports.
