Speaking to NDTV, Lalit Modi said “I didn’t see much of IPL women’s games this year (Women’s T20 Challenge), but I think one of the biggest things they should do is make it mandatory for an IPL franchise to have a women’s team.”

Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are likely to organize a female version of the IPL from 2023 onwards. So far, fans of women’s cricket were treated to a three-team competition called the Women’s T20 Challenge, but the full-fledged competition have not come to fruition.

Further elaborating his point, Modi added “If an IPL franchise owner is able to have a women’s team, you’ll see the bench strength in Indian women’s cricket go up. You’ll see investment in women’s cricket by owners who are already making good money now.”

Meanwhile, while the most popular franchise-based cricket league in the world still does not have a female competition, West Indies’ Caribbean Premier League have got the upper hand in this regard.

Recently, three CPL teams have announced their squads for the upcoming Women’s CPL. Kolkata Knight Riders’ sister franchise Trinbago Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals’ West Indian wing Barbados Royals, and the Guyana Amazon Warriors will participate in that competition.
