Kuldeep Yadav, the esteemed spinner from India, emphasized the significant role played by the legendary Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni throughout his career. Although Kuldeep made his international debut under the leadership of Virat Kohli, he acknowledged Dhoni’s invaluable contributions from behind the stumps.
The veteran wicketkeeper shared strategic insights with the bowlers, aiding in their improvement and delivering the desired results for the Indian team.
“I wanted him (Dhoni) to play more because it was very easy for us when we were bowling,” Kuldeep told The Indian Express. “After Dhoni retired, my performance with the ball wasn’t great.“
“It happens when a person guides you and that person’s influence is not there anymore, then suddenly everything is on your shoulders. It takes time for you to react to the situation… that probably happened to me. Then slowly you understand and become self-reliant.”
“No doubt the time I had with Mahi bhai on the field and even off the field was great.” said Kuldeep
Kuldeep expressed his longing for Dhoni’s guidance after the latter’s retirement from international cricket in 2020. He noted a decline in his bowling performance during this period, attributing it to the absence of Dhoni’s influence.
Kuldeep highlighted the ease with which he and fellow spinner Yuzvendra Chahal operated when Dhoni was keeping wickets.
“Chahal and I really enjoyed when Mahi bhai was keeping wickets, he used to give lots of ideas. I didn’t have to think too much when I was bowling. I just had to bowl and he would even adjust the fields. ” added Kuldeep.
Moreover, Kuldeep discussed his evolving role within the Indian team, particularly focusing on his batting improvements showcased during the recent Test series against England. He credited the team management for supporting his batting development without imposing pressure.
With guidance from batting coach Vikram Rathour, Kuldeep honed his batting skills and maintained a calm demeanor, emphasizing the importance of contributing to the team in crucial situations.
“The team management backed me but didn’t say I had to compulsorily do it. They told me that I have a lot of batting skills, but didn’t put any pressure on me that I had to score runs.” Kuldeep Yadav concluded.
