Australia cricket team batter Travis Head dropped a huge hint on being the side’s Test opener for the upcoming season. His remarks came after he decimated England in ENG vs AUS 1st ODI with a scintillating century. There is a lot of debate surrounding the need for Head to replace Steve Smith as Usman Khawaja’s partner at the top for the upcoming Test season. Head’s knock against England and his form over the years has only made his case stronger.
Will Travis Head replace Steve Smith as Test opener?
Travis Head’s whirlwind 154-run knock helped Australia smother England by seven wickets in the 1st ODI at Trent Bridge. With Australia set to kick-start a gruelling Test season with a five-match series against India in November, the clamour over Head replacing Smith as the Test opener has grown louder. When asked about the speculation, Head did not hesitate to throw his hat into the ring.
“Yes,” he said, when asked if he was aware of the speculation in the media at home. “Keep the chatter: it makes it interesting,” Travis Head told media persons.

Steve Smith’s top-order woes
Smith hasn’t tasted much success as an opener along with Usman Khawaja. With just one-half century and an average of 28.50 as opener, Smith simply isn’t the best opener that Australia can afford.
These sentiments have been echoed by his own teammates, including fellow opener Usman Khawaja. The southpaw had earlier stated that he would love to see Smith bat in the middle-order rather than opening the innings. Similar thoughts have been put forward by many former Australian cricketers who demand a specialist opener in place of Smith.
