Will Suryakumar Yadav get MI captaincy after taking over reins from Hardik Pandya in T20Is?

While there has been a lot of debate over if Pandya deserved to be replaced by SKY, a pertinent point over the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians come to the forefront

India’s explosive middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav will shoulder the responsibility of captain as he will lead India’s T20I side against Sri Lanka. The Mumbai Indians star pipped his teammate & skipper Hardik Pandya to occupy the position of skipper for the upcoming white-ball series against the neighbours. While there has been a lot of debate over if Pandya deserved to be replaced by SKY, a pertinent point over the captaincy of the Mumbai Indians come to the forefront.

Will SKY outdo Hardik Pandya in IPL as well?

Suryakumar Yadav was a frontrunner for the post of the Mumbai Indians captaincy alongside Jasprit Bumrah before Pandya’s trade to the franchise. In a surprise move, for both SKY and the fans, MI decided to replace Rohit Sharma with Hardik ahead of the IPL 2024 auction in December. Surya, who remained injured during that period, made his return (just like Pandya) in IPL 2024 and went on to feature in India’s T20 World Cup side.

Suryakumar Yadav T20Is captaincy record

Suryakumar Yadav, primarily known for his 360-degree batting style, has only captained India in T20Is. Although he has never been the permanent captain, he has stepped in to fill the gap when the regular captain is unavailable. After the 2023 World Cup, he led India in a T20I series against Australia, securing a 4-1 victory as a form of revenge for the World Cup loss.

Overall, Yadav has captained India in seven T20I matches, winning five and losing only two. Besides Australia, he has also captained against South Africa.
