Will Rohit Sharma return to domestic cricket? Indian captain drops hint after IND vs SL series loss

India captain Rohit Sharma emphasised on the importance of domestic cricket and said that it mattered more than the IPL

India cricket team skipper stressed on the importance of domestic cricket following the loss in the IND vs SL ODI series. The team is headed into a 42-day break from international crickets and many of the stars are expected to take part in domestic tournaments that are scheduled to be held in between the break.

Rohit Sharma opined that domestic cricket such as the Ranji Trophy and other tournaments played a crucial role in the selection of the players to the national team.

Rohit Sharma sheds light on importance of domestic cricket

Speaking at the post-match press conference after IND vs SL 3rd ODI, Rohit Sharma pointed out that the Indian team were able to recruit many players from domestic cricket and not IPL. He added that the performance of the players in Ranji Trophy, one-day format and Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament were considered before making selection for Team India.

That’s always been our goal – to make sure that guys who are available go and play Ranji Trophy. Our domestic cricket is the backbone of our international cricket. A lot of the guys who are now representing the country have come up playing domestic cricket, so our domestic cricket is crucial for everyone. We want to make sure that it stays competitive,” Rohit said.

With the Indian team heading into a break, it is highly unlikely that Rohit Sharma will play domestic cricket. The Indian skipper was in sublime form in the series against Zimbabwe, managing to accumulate 156 runs to his name from three innings.

While the rest of the batting order struggled against Sri Lanka, Rohit ensured that the team got going by providing good starts. The Hitman will next be seen in India’s series against Bangladesh in September.

Stars, including Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan and others, are expected to take part in the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament which begins towards the end of August.
