On Day 5 of the 3rd Test of Border-Gavaskar Series, several big events came. Firstly, rain came to the rescue of the visitors, ensuring the India vs Australia series heads to Melbourne with a tied scoreline of 1-1. However, the day ended with an emotional moment that left every cricket fan teary-eyed, as legendary Indian spinner R Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket across all formats.
After 14 years of delighting cricket fans with his carrom balls and reliable batting, Ashwin’s retirement came as a shock to many, especially as it was announced midway through the series. This decision means the legendary Indian spinner will no longer don the Indian jersey.
However, some fans might still be confused. Since Ravichandran Ashwin was bought by Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 mega auction, they are now wondering whether he will play in IPL 2025 or not?
Will R Ashwin Play For CSK In IPL?
With 180 wickets in his IPL career from 212 games, Ashwin’s fans need not worry, as he will play in the upcoming IPL. Ashwin, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings for a hefty price of INR 9.75 crore, has clarified that his retirement is only from international cricket and will not affect his participation in the IPL.
Why did R Ashwin retire?
Although the exact reason is still not clear, if we look at what he has said in the past, during the 2017-2019 period, he struggled with mental health issues. At that time, he was also affected by an injury called patellar tendonitis, commonly referred to as Jumper’s Knee. This condition, caused by repeated movements like jumping, weakens the patellar tendon in the knee, making walking difficult. Anyone can imagine how such a knee problem could affect bowling, and this could be one of the reasons for his retirement.
Also, the self-realization of not securing a consistent place in overseas tours, with many bowlers like Washington Sundar who is doing a wonderful job and now Nitesh Reddy also capable of bowling a few overs if needed, may have made retirement easier for Ashwin.
