The Mumbai Indians have received a significant boost ahead of their upcoming clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit and ready for selection. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene revealed on Sunday that Bumrah, sidelined since January due to a stress reaction in his back, has made a full recovery. The fast bowler has rejoined the squad and participated in an intense training session at the Wankhede Stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah to play in MI vs RCB IPL match
“He’s available, he’s training today, and should be available for the RCB game,” Jayawardene said. Bumrah arrived in Mumbai on Saturday after being cleared by the BCCI’s medical staff at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Bumrah, a cornerstone of MI’s bowling attack since 2013, was the team’s highest wicket-taker in IPL 2024, claiming 20 wickets. His return couldn’t come at a more opportune time, as the team looks to bounce back from a disappointing start to the season, having lost three of their first four matches.
His presence is anticipated to bring stability and experience to a relatively young bowling lineup featuring emerging talents like Vignesh Puthur, Ashwani Kumar, and Satyanarayana Raju.
At training, Bumrah bowled alongside Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, troubling the likes of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton. MI’s coaching staff, including bowling coach Lasith Malinga, closely monitored his performance.
Jayawardene urged fans to be patient: “Boom’s coming back from a decent layoff, so we need to give him that space. But knowing Jasprit, he’ll be up for it.”
