Traditionally, players are often identified by the teams they represent. Yet, there exists a select group of cricketers who become the very embodiment of their teams.
The likes of MS Dhoni with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rohit Sharma with Mumbai Indians (MI) are the example of that. However, it seems that Rohit Sharma, one of the most successful captain in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), could be playing his last season for Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2024.
The 36-year-old, who has led MI to five IPL titles, might be looking for a fresh start in the IPL.
No captaincy, No Rohit in MI?
One of the possible reasons for Rohit’s exit from MI could be the loss of captaincy to Hardik Pandya. The star all-rounder made a shocking return to the Mumbai franchise after a successful two years with Gujarat Titans.
But the biggest shock came when the MI franchise announced Hardik as their new skipper for the IPL 2024, bringing an end to Rohit’s historic captaincy reign.
While the franchise time and again has stated that everything has been fine in the camp, the big change in leadership could be a bitter pill to swallow for Rohit, who has been the face of MI for over a decade. Rohit might feel that he still has a lot to offer as a captain and a player, and he might not be too keen to play under Pandya’s shadow.

If it happens, Rohit’s exit from MI would be a huge blow for the franchise and its fans, who have witnessed his glorious journey from a talented youngster to a legendary leader. Rohit has been synonymous with MI’s success and legacy, and it would be hard to imagine him in any other jersey.
However, as they say, all good things must come to an end, and IPL 2024 could be Rohit Sharma’s last in Mumbai Indians’ jersey.
