Rohit Sharma is in a massive form rut. His issues are for the whole world to see. Amid a lack of runs and India cricket losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in a decade, there were calls for the Indian captain to step down and even retire from Test cricket.
Fatherhood to play a role in Rohit Sharma’s retirement
Rohit has decided he won’t hang up his boots in the longest format. But former Australian captain Adam Gilchrist feels that his poor form will have an effect on his career across his career. “I don’t see Rohit going to England,” Gilchrist said on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.
Gilly suggests that becoming a father would play a role in Rohit Sharma’s Test future. “I just felt that he says he will assess it when he gets home. I mean, the first thing he will be met with when he gets home is a two-month-old baby that he has to change the nappies on,” the legendary wicketkeeper added.
“Now that might incentivise him to go to England. But I don’t see him pressing on,” Gilchrist said.
ICC Champions Trophy be Rohit Sharma’s last tournament
At 37, Team India and Rohit himself might be looking to move on. The pressure is increasing, and if things don’t go well, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might as well show the door to the Indian captain.
“I think he’ll probably have a crack at the Champions Trophy and that might be…that might see him out,” added Gilchrist.
