Former chief selector Kris Srikkanth predicts that Rohit Sharma will be unable to participate in the 2027 World Cup in South Africa owing to fitness issues. His remarks come after the Hitman recently assured a crowd in the USA that he would continue to participate in cricket for a while more. After leading India to the T20 World Cup glory, Rohit Sharma will return to action in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka.
Srikkanth doesn’t back Rohit Sharma for 2027 World Cup
The former selector accused new head coach Gautam Gambhir of taking a U-turn when it came to fitness while laying his roadmap for the future. He opined that Rohit Sharma wouldn’t be fit for the 2027 World Cup, while backing Virat Kolhi to be a sure inclusion in the side.
“He took a U-turn now, saying there is no player like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. After becoming head coach, he said that both have a lot of cricket left and hopefully they will fit for the 2027 World Cup,” Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel.
What Rohit Sharma said about ODI retirement
Rohit Sharma had earlier said that, “I don’t look that far ahead. So clearly you will be seeing me play at least for a while.” His statement came while he was inaugurating a cricket academy in the USA and was asked about his future in terms of the Indian national side.
Under Rohit Sharma, India played the finals of the ODI World Cup, eventually losing out to Australia. But now that the ICC jinx is broken and the team is set, India is out for more silverware. Rohit will continue playing and leading his country in ODIs and Tests and has no hopes of retiring soon.
