Will Bangladesh be able to host Women’s T20 World Cup? BCB seeks assurance from Army amid unrest

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has sent a letter to the Army seeking security assurances for hosting the Women's T20 World Cup in October

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has reached out to the country’s army seeking assurance on the security for the Women’s T20 World Cup. The marquee tournament, scheduled to be held in October, will see 10 teams taking part in clashes scheduled in Dhaka and Sylhet.

The current situation in the country, given the violent protests and the fleeing of former PM Sheikh Hasina, has cast aspersions on if the T20 WC can be hosted by Bangladesh. The ICC is also considering India, Sri Lanka and UAE as alternative venues if Bangladesh cannot host the tournament successfully.

Bangladesh’s hopes of hosting T20 World Cup to become a dream?

As per Cricbuzz, BCB’s Umpire Committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu claimed that the board had sent a letter to the Army seeking assurance for hosting the T20 World Cup. He admitted that most of the officials were not present in the country at present. He added that the ICC had contacted the board over the issue and that the BCB will get back to them after getting assurances over security from the interim government.

We are trying to host the tournament,” Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu, BCB’s Umpire Committee chairman, told Cricbuzz. “To be honest there are not too many among us present in the country and on Thursday (August 8) we have sent a letter to the Army Chief regarding assurance about the security of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup as we have only two months in hand,” Mithu said.

In the wake of the fresh round of violence, the ICC issued a statement over Bangladesh hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup.

The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies and our own independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants,” the ICC said on Monday.
