After a complete dominance in the T20 series, the Windies were blown away against the sheer pace and probing lengths from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as Australia registered 133 runs win over the host in the opening game which was reduced to 49 overs per side due to rain.
Opting to bat first, Australia featured three debutants – Josh Philippe, Ben McDermott, and Wes Agar – and managed to put a good total of 252/9 in the allotted overs against Hayden Walsh’s fifer (5-39). Skipper Alex Carey (67) and A Turner (49) were the top scorers for the visitors whereas the debutants Josh Philippe (39) and Ben McDermott (28) managed 51 runs partnership for the first wicket. In reply, the Windies lost a wicket on the first ball of the innings and were soon reduced to 27/6 before skipper K Pollard scored a fifty trying to resurrect the run chase. However, Starc and Hazlewood struck again and eventually bowled out the hosts for mere 123 runs in 26.2 overs. The duo of M Starc (5-48) and H Hazlewood (3-11) picked up 8 wickets in tandem.
The Aussies lead the three-match series by 1-0. On the other hand, the Windies have no room for making mistakes in the remaining two games and will be looking to bank on their T20I performance to bounce back and level the series.
