Why SRH cannot use RTM card for Washington Sundar in IPL mega auction?

SRH cannot use their right to match (RTM) for Washington Sundar in IPL mega auction.

Ahead of the upcoming IPL mega auction, SRH retained their core members, including their skipper Pat Cummins. Despite retaining their top players, SRH could not find a place to retain Washington Sundar for IPL 2025. Going to the IPL mega auction, SRH cannot use their right to match (RTM) for Washington Sundar. Let us explain to you why.

Why SRH cannot use RTM for Washington Sundar?

According to IPL guidelines, a team can retain as many as five capped players via retentions before the auction or using Right To Match (RTM) during the auction. Additionally, they can keep a maximum of two uncapped players, but the total number of retentions shouldn’t exceed six.

There’s no cap on Indian or overseas players. So, in SRH’s case, they have already retained five capped players, leaving no place for more capped retentions, and Washington Sundar is capped.

SRH can use an RTM on one of their uncapped players but not on Sundar or any capped player. They have exhausted their maximum capped retention before the auction.

Sunrisers Hyderabad might have exhausted all five retentions, but there’s still a way to get Washington Sundar back. They can re-bid for him during the auction and get him back by giving the most sum.

SRH retained players for IPL 2025

  1. Heinrich Klaasen – INR 23 crores
  2. Pat Cummins – INR 18 crores
  3. Travis Head – INR 14 crores
  4. Abhishek Sharma – INR 14 crores
  5. Nitish Kumar Reddy – INR 6 crores

As stated above, SRH retained their core squad for the IPL 2025. The 2024 runners-up retained the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, and Nitish Kumar Reddy. The Orange Army will look to get their second IPL title in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League to be held next year in India.
