The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to hand out the central contracts for 2025/26 after the Champions Trophy. If there is one India cricket team star who deserves to be promoted to the top grade, then it is none other than Shubman Gill. The current set of players in the A+ category include Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja.
Gill to be promoted to A+ grade on BCCI central contracts list?
As per the BCCI’s policy, players performing in all three formats will be considered for the A+ category. Over the years, Gill has gone on to become a vital part of the Indian top-order across formats. While he is India’s opener and vice-captain in ODIs and is being groomed to succeed Rohit Sharma as captain, he has had a decent run in Tests and T20Is as well.
The very fact that he could be the next Indian skipper for ODIs is a signal that Gill could be given a promotion. Not to forget, a report suggested that the BCCI was waiting to roll out the central contracts as the board wanted to gauge the performance of players in the ongoing Champions Trophy before taking a call.

Gill played only 3 ODIs in 2024, managing to score 57 runs in those games. However, he returned to good form in 2025, amassing 416 runs in 7 ODIs played so far this year. It includes two hundreds and fifties each, and he averages 69.33.
In Tests, he had a rather poor run in the last series against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Nevertheless, he managed to amass 866 runs from 22 innings in 2024, averaging 43.30. While he still has miles to go in terms of matching Virat Kohli’s calibre at number 3 in the longest format of the game, Gill is surely a long-term option at the top-order for India in Tests without a doubt.
The Punjab batter played 8 T20Is in 2024, and managed to score 266 runs. He did not play in the T20 World Cup in which India lifted the title but took part in the series against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka that followed.
With Kohli, Rohit and Jadeja retiring from T20Is and standing the chance of being demoted from A+ category, Gill stands a solid chance to move up from A to the top grade. His performance in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand could also determine his fate in the central contracts list.
