Sanju Samson remains one of the best batters in India. His ball-striking ability makes him stand apart, and that’s why he was always in and about the India cricket team’s white-ball squads. In the last couple of years, Samson has also started to get more opportunities as his game matures.
The wicketkeeper has become a mainstay in T20Is. However, that hasn’t been the case in ODIs. Despite having a splendid record, Samson wasn’t selected for Team India’s last 50-over series against Sri Lanka in August. It seems he’ll continue to be away from India’s squad for England ODIs and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Why Sanju Samson won’t be in India’s squad for India vs England ODIs & Champions Trophy
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra thinks Samson doesn’t stand a chance of being included in the team for the upcoming ODI series/tournament. Samson hasn’t played ODI or List A cricket in over 13 months and hasn’t even been part of Kerala’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25.
It was reported that Samson didn’t turn up for the preparatory camp and the domestic 50-over tournament for reasons unknown. This is exactly why Aakash feels that the wicketkeeper won’t be selected. One can’t determine what his form in ODI cricket is and whether he’s in the right mindset to play the longer format after he’s been annihilating bowlers in T20Is.
“I feel Suryakumar Yadav won’t be a part of this team. He is actually not playing ODIs and hasn’t scored runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy either. Sanju Samson hasn’t played at all (in ODIs or the Vijay Hazare Trophy). One didn’t play, and the other didn’t score runs, so their names are not going to come up,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel
