Why is Australia’s WC hero playing in IND vs AUS T20 series? Travis Head responds

Head’s 137 off 120 balls in the World Cup Final helped him claim the ‘player of the match’ award.

Many former cricketers and experts have bashed the timing of the IND vs AUS T20 series. The 5-match series started on November 23, just four days after the two sides met in the final of the 2023 World Cup. Two greats of the game, Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist, have also jumped on the bandwagon. The former rivals criticised the timing of the series after they invited the ‘man of the match’ in the Final of the World Cup, Travis Head, to their podcast, Club Prairie Fire.

However, the reply they got was not something they were expecting.

Gilchrist, who was the ‘man of the match’ in the 2007 World Cup Final, asked Travis Head what he did wrong to be part of the IND vs AUS T20 series.

Head responded by saying that he wants to be part of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, and since he isn’t part of Australia’s T20 squad, he’d like to make use of this opportunity to make his case.

“I had four and a half weeks at home due to my hand injury. It was a blessing to spend some time at home, but we don’t have a long time before the T20 World Cup.

I’m someone who is on the fringe of that team, and I would like to be in another World Cup. It (the IND vs AUS series) gives me the opportunity to have a crack (at the opening spot), Travis Head added.

The southpaw continued, “The plan was to play a shield game or a couple of T20s to prepare for the Test match (AUS vs PAK Test series). I felt like T20 was the best way to prepare for Test cricket.
