Uday Saharan, who was among the reserves in India’s Under-19 squad which won the World Cup in 2022 under Yash Dhull, will now captain the Indian contingent in the upcoming ICC U19 World Cup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced the India U19 squad for the upcoming tournament.
Uday Saharan, a middle-order batter who has played U14, U16 and U19 cricket for Punjab, is also leading the Indian side at the ongoing U19 Asia Cup in Dubai. Under his leadership, the young guns have managed to reach the semi-finals of the ongoing tournament and will look to lift the coveted trophy.
Speaking more about Uday Saharan, the 19-year-old failed to get going against Afghanistan in the opening match of the ongoing U19 Asia Cup as he scored 20 runs. However, the Indian skipper came back strongly against the arch-rivals Pakistan and played a crucial knock of 60 runs. The right-handed batter did not get a chance to bat against Nepal on Tuesday (December 12).
The India U19 squad which will feature in the World Cup is also set to participate in a tri-series before the mega event. Apart from India U19, the series will feature hosts South Africa and England. The defending champs will kick off their U19 World Cup campaign on 20 January 2024 against Bangladesh in Bloemfontein. The tri-series leading up to it starts on December 29, 2023, with the final with the final scheduled on 10 January 2024.
