Former Indian player and known to be a top-class all-rounder in the Ranji circuit, Sairaj Bahutule has been named India’s interim bowling coach. Previously, it was Morne Morkel who was expected to be the head coach. Gautam Gambhir’s favorite, but for the Sri Lanka series, Bahutule’s appointment has come as a surprise, adding to the curiosity among cricket fans about this veteran Mumbai all-rounder.
Having played 2 Tests and 8 ODIs for India, Sairaj Bahutule did not see much success at the international level. Since his debut in 2001, young all-rounders like Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif have burst onto the scene and later became the faces of Indian cricket, whereas Bahutule’s career did not take off as expected.
Sairaj Bahutule’s impressive domestic record for Mumbai
Although, as mentioned earlier, Bahutule did not see much success on the international stage for India, his domestic record is impressive. He is known as a pioneer of Mumbai cricket, alongside Amol Muzumdar and Wasim Jaffer. Having played 188 first-class matches for Mumbai, the star all-rounder has accumulated 6,176 runs, including nine hundred and 26 fifties, for the 42-time champion team. Also, with his leg spin, he has also amassed 630 wickets, making him one of the greats of domestic cricket.
He is also a spin bowling coach for the Rajasthan Royals and is now set to serve as the interim bowling coach for India in the Sri Lanka series.
