Madhwal, who plays for Uttarakhand in the domestic circuit, was selected by MI in 2022 as a replacement for the injured Suryakumar Yadav. He was the first cricketer from Uttarakhand to participate in the IPL.
Notably, Madhwal, who pursued engineering studies, was a tennis ball player. However, in 2019, he was encouraged by former Uttarakhand coach Wasim Jaffer, and the current coach Manish Jha, to start training with the red ball.
This marked a new success for the pacer and ahead of the 2023 domestic season, the fast bowler was named Uttarakhand’s white-ball skipper.
During the post-match presentation, MI skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his confidence in Madhwal and applauded him for taking his role to perfection after Jofra Archer’s departure.
“He (Akash) was part of the team last year as a support bowler, and once Jofra was gone and I knew he had the skills and the character to do the job for us. Over the years we have seen many guys coming in from Mumbai Indians and playing for India,” MI skipper Rohit Sharma said after the match.
