The WTC final race will see some conclusion soon as many things are happening, but still, no team has got the qualified tag in front of their name. Although it is right to say that many teams have been relegated and have no chance, such as England, West Indies, and Pakistan, who were initially in the race but are now all out. However, there are a few close tussles going on between few teams.
Clearly, there is no question that the WTC table is extremely full of fluctuations, and that’s why no one has clearly qualified till now.
So, who are the teams in contention for the WTC final 2025? See all the teams, and among these teams, we’ll soon get two names who will play at Lord’s from June 11 to 15, 2025.
Teams who are in Contention for the WTC Final 2025
South Africa
Having a solid percentage in front of their name with 63.33% already in their box, South Africa can still reach 69.44% if they win their remaining games. With just two home Tests against Pakistan left, they are almost at the sureshot stage of securing a WTC final ticket. They recently whitewashed Sri Lanka 2-0 at home and delivered impressive performances against Bangladesh before that.
Now, all they need is a win against Pakistan. If they manage to achieve that, it will be a huge boost, and they will secure their place at Lord’s, irrespective of how other teams fare. The odds are in their favour, the players are performing well, and we might just see South Africa playing in England.
Australia
When it comes to the Australian team, who has two Test matches left against India and two against Sri Lanka, currently standing in second place, they are also strong contenders for a top-two finish. Although with the way things are going for Border-Gavaskar, we can expect some twists in the tale, still Australia remains firmly in contention, alongside South Africa.
If we look at their chances, every win will help stabilize their spot. Currently, the series against India is tied 1-1. Even in the worst-case scenario, if they draw the series 2-2, they will still have a chance to remain in contention, as they have the Sri Lanka series left.
India
Team India, who suffered an unexpected 0-3 defeat against New Zealand at home, has seen a change in fortunes since then. The team was at the top for a while, but not now, and to stay in the WTC contention, they need to win every game.
We saw how, in Perth, India thumped Australia by 295 runs. Although they lost to Australia in the pink-ball Test, they showed great composure in the Gabba Test, with valuable contributions from the lower-order batter and major help from the weather, which allowed them to secure a draw. Now, if India wants a ticket to the WTC final, they must win all their remaining matches if they dont want to rely on the results of other teams.
Apart from these three top teams, New Zealand and Sri Lanka also have some very outside chances.
New Zealand has a 48.21% winning percentage, while Sri Lanka has 45.45%. Both teams had significant opportunities a few weeks ago, but their chances of reaching the WTC final are now slim. New Zealand’s loss to England and Sri Lanka’s clean sweep by South Africa have dimmed their hopes. Still, both teams can hope for a miracle.
