The fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) of Border-Gavaskar Trophy is now in the visitors’ control thanks to a spectacular century from Steven Smith and a solid performance from Australia’s bowlers. India was at 164/5 at the close of Day 2, 130 runs behind Australia’s commanding four hundred and forty-four. At the wicket, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja were undefeated with six and four runs, respectively.
Starting at 311/6, Australia added crucial runs, led by a 112-run stand between Steven Smith (140) and Pat Cummins (49). Cummins fell to Ravindra Jadeja, but Smith anchored the innings as Australia posted 474. Jasprit Bumrah (4/99) and Jadeja (3 wickets) impressed, but India struggled to contain the lower order.
India’s reply began shakily, with Rohit Sharma out in the second over. KL Rahul added 43 for the second wicket but fell before tea. A century stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli offered hope, but Jaiswal’s run-out triggered a collapse. India ended at 164/5, with Pant and Jadeja unbeaten.
