When will Mohammed Shami make his comeback for India?

After a stellar performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Mohammed Shami is out of the Indian team due to an ankle injury. Will he make his comeback for India, and if yes, then when?

Mohammed Shami, who has consistently excelled with his bowling performances for India, whether in Test cricket or ODIs, has become a key solution to India’s bowling challenges. Over the past year, a lot has happened in Shami’s professional career.

Just a few months ago, Mohammed Shami delivered a pinnacle performance at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. There, he combined his talent and experience to showcase exceptional bowling skills, leaving cricket fans and experts in awe with his pace and swing. Shami took 24 wickets in just seven games at an average of 10.70 and an economy rate of 5.26, including one four-wicket haul and three five-wicket hauls. His best figures were 7/57 against New Zealand in the semifinal, a performance that is still remembered by many.

However, since the World Cup, Shami has not played much cricket, reportedly due to an ankle injury. In fact, Shami played through pain during the tournament and did not let it affect his performance, but ultimately, he opted to rest after the World Cup. Now, the question is, when will he return to play for India?

Mohammed Shami injury update

If you’re a fan of Shami’s bowling, there’s good news, he has started recovering from his injury and has resumed bowling practice at the NCA. After missing the South Africa tour following the tournament and the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in January, with things now seem under control, we may see the Indian pacer back in action soon.

Mohammed Shami comeback

Now the question is: will Mohammed Shami make a comeback for the Indian team? And if yes, then when? Recent reports suggest that Shami is set to return for the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. In March, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said that Shami’s return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh. Also, Ajit Agarkar, the Chairman of Selectors for the Indian men’s team, is confident about Shami’s comeback to the Test team.

Shami, who not only missed the South Africa tour and the Afghanistan T20 series but also failed to play in IPL 2024 for GT and the ICC T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, which India won after beating South Africa in the final. However, with many home games coming up and then the ICC Champions Trophy, things look more promising for Shami if he stays fit. With 448 wickets in 188 international matches, including 11 five-wicket hauls, there is no question that this 33-year-old has been among the best in his bowling business. It will be interesting to see how he makes his comeback.
