Virat Kohli captained his first Test in 2014 amid an emotional atmosphere in Brisbane where India and Australia met after paying homage to Phillip Hughes. The Brisbane Test was postponed due to the tragic demise of Phillip Hughes. Virat Kohli, who is known for his ‘ruthless’ approach in Test cricket, went all-out from his first Test match.
However, India failed to win a close contest, facing defeat by 48 runs in the 1st Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2014.
Kohli was at his usual best as he scored two hundreds after taking the responsibility of captaincy, becoming just the second batter after Greg Chappell to score two hundred in his first Test as captain.
King Kohli smashed 115 and 141 in respective innings in the first match of his Test Captaincy in 2014. Murli Vijay accompanied him to chase a total of 364 runs. However, India failed to clinch a win as they lost by 48 runs in a hard-fought match.
India lost by 48 runs
Australia’s David Warner, Michael Clarke, and Steve Smith powered Australia to declare at 517/7d in the first innings. In response, India gave a tough fight and put in a total of 444 runs as they were tailed by only 73 runs.
In the second innings, Australia scored 290/5d to give a target of 364. India found hope to chase down a challenging total as Kohli and M Vijay battled fiercely after lunch. Vijay dismissed for 99 by Lyon, left Kohli to carry the weight of the chase on his shoulders. The skipper, undeterred, steered India past the 300-run mark with sheer determination.
However Kohli was caught at the boundary when he was at 141. Kohli’s wicket proved to be the beginning of India’s downfall as the team succumbed to pressure and lost by a margin of 48 runs.
