What’s after Bumrah-Shami? India bowling coach responds to ‘lack of bench strength’ criticism

Indian bowling coach also emphasised that the team had a long-term vision of creating a strong bench strength in every format.

India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has responded to the criticism of the lack of bench strength in the Indian bowling department. Mhambrey, who has extended his contract along with head coach Rahul Dravid and other coaching staff, said that the team had achieved many milestones in the two-year cycle, which includes reaching the final of ODI World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC).

However, the Indian bowling coach also emphasised that the team had a long-term vision of creating a strong bench strength in every format, and had identified at least 3-5 bowlers from the next batch who could be groomed for the future.

“When we took over, we needed to see that two years down the line, we have also created a sufficient bench strength in every format. We had to identify at least 3-5 bowlers from next batch and also ensure that they get enough game time and are ready for the challenges of international cricket. Rahul, Vicky (Rathour), myself and (T) Dilip got together and identified the bowlers”, Mhambrey told PTI in an interview.

Notably, despite India’s comprehensive 4-1 T20I series win against Australia, Indian pace bowlers, including Prasidh Krishna and Avesh Khan were under the pump in few of the occasions.

Prasidh Krishna faced severe criticism after his poor display in the 3rd T20I as he failed to defend 20 runs in the final over. The young pacer conceded 68 runs in his 4-over quota and became the Indian bowler with the most expensive figures in T20Is.

Mhambrey also showered high praises for the senior bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and claimed that many “would be envy of the duo’s success”.

“The way Shami and Bumrah have managed to dominate the the batters around the world is something that has surprised Mhambrey. Many would be envy of their success”, Mhambrey said.

He said that the team had a busy schedule ahead, with tours to South Africa, Sri Lanka, and England, and that the team would be ready for the challenges. He said that the team had a lot of depth and talent in the bowling department, and that he was confident that the team would achieve greater heights in the future.
