With his match-winning effort, Pat Cummins led Australia’s batting to a thrilling victory over England by a margin of two wickets. Cummins, who took four wickets for the Baggy Greens in the second innings, scored 44 runs while unbeaten to secure Australia’s historic victory at Edgbaston. Wild celebrations broke out in the Australian camp as the top bowler got the decisive runs for the team that had just won the ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
Cummins threw off his helmet, flung his bat, and lifted teammate Nathan Lyon after sealing the Ashes opener in Birmingham with a boundary. Australia took a 1-0 lead in the bilateral Test series between the bitter rivals after overcoming a difficult total of 281. Usman Khawaja, the visitor’s opener, led all scorers in both innings earning him Player of the Match honours while Cummins contributed as a finisher with the bat.
