What is the difference between uncapped and capped players in IPL?

Are you aware of what capped and uncapped players are in the IPL? With the IPL 2025 retention talks heating up, see the details of which players are considered capped and which are uncapped.

With the IPL 2025 mega auction coming, the excitement is building all around, especially as the retention process heats up the cricket market. Franchises will submit the list of players they want to retain, with the deadline set for 31st October. Retained capped players will get massive amounts from their franchises, and also teams have to retain uncapped players, as they can keep a maximum of 2 uncapped players before the mega auction. This makes things interesting, as a total of 6 players can be retained. If, for some reason, they choose not to retain all 6 or opt for just 3 players, they can acquire the other 3 players via the Right to Match during the mega auction. But, do you know what do capped and uncapped players mean in the IPL? Take a look at the details.

What is uncapped player in IPL?

In very simple terms, an uncapped player is one who hasn’t represented his national team. Currently, players like Ayush Badoni, Nehal Wadhera, and Sameer Rizvi, who have not played for India, are considered uncapped. Also, there are some new updates, BCCI is putting the rule  back that was scrapped in 2021. This rule states that any international player who hasn’t played cricket at the top level for five years or more and lacks a central contract with the BCCI can be termed as uncapped. For now, if franchises decide to retain uncapped players, they will have to pay INR 4 crore for each uncapped player.

What is capped player in IPL?

Just the opposite of uncapped, players who are in the international mix and playing for their national teams are considered capped players. Therefore, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Kane Williamson are all capped players.

How many players can franchises retain before IPL 2025 mega auction?

IPL 2025 retention says that teams can retain up to 6 players from the existing squad. This can be done either via retention or by using the Right to Match. Interestingly, in the past, there were limitations on number of RTM cards, but now teams can use up to 6 cards depending on how many players they retain before the auction. If they don’t retain any players, they can use all 6 RTM cards during the auction.

Last date for IPL 2025 retention

The teams have just a few days left, as October 31st is the last day for them to submit the retention list.
