What is retention meaning in the IPL auction?

The news coming all about IPL retentions and only a few hours left for the franchises to reveal their list of retained players, do you know what retention actually means in the IPL?

With IPL retention currently the talk of the town, many changes are surely coming, and big names are expected to go under the hammer, from Andre Russell leaving KKR to KL Rahul’s future with LSG. All of these developments coming with big questions, as there are chances that all ten franchises will take big moves before the auction. The IPL governing council has given them a deadline of 31st October at 5 PM to submit their retention lists.

For now, six players can be retained, which can be done via the retention process before the auction, or they can send all players into the auction and use the right to match to get back some players. But do you know what retention actually means in IPL? Since whenever the IPL auction approaches, there is always talk about whom teams will release and whom they will keep for the long term. See what the meaning of retention is in IPL.

What is retention in IPL?

In extremely simple words, retention in the IPL means that if franchises decide to get a few players back into the mix without sending them into the auction, it’s the number of players the franchise wants to keep from their previous season’s squad before the auction for the next season. For example, if MI has 20 players in their squad, they can pick a few core players to retain and release the others before the auction. This year, since it’s a mega auction, they can retain six players, while the rest are all set to go under the auction hammer. Some big names could also feature in this list.

What if a franchise goes into the mega auction with zero retentions?

This year, since there are no limitations on RTM cards, unlike in the past where only a few RTM cards were allowed for the franchises, this time, they can go with 0-6 cards. This means that if a franchise decides not to retain any players before the IPL mega auction 2025, they can do so, as they can get those players back via RTM.
