The Men in Blue took on Australia in a virtual knock out match in the 2016 T20 World Cup. The stakes were quite high as the winner of the match would have advanced to semi-finals. Played in Mohali, the toss went in the favour of the Aussies as they opted to have a bat first on a good batting track.

The opening duo of Usman Khawaja (26 runs) and Aaron Finch (43 runs) gave a flying start to the visitors. As a result, Australia reached the 50-run mark in just four overs. In reply, Ashish Nehra scalped the first wicket by sending back Khawaja. Indian spinners including Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuvraj Singh got the vital breakthroughs in the middle overs to put a break on Australia’s momentum.

Some crucial knocks from the likes of Glenn Maxwell (31 runs), Shane Watson (18 runs). James Faulkner (10 runs) and Peter Nevill (10 runs). meant that the Australian side post a respectable total of 160 runs in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing 161 to win, the Indian side got off to a poor start. India lost both their openers inside the field restrictions as both Rohit and Dhawan failed to get going. The situation got trickier when Watson scalped the wicket of Suresh Raina with India being reduced to 49/3. However, veteran Yuvraj Singh (21 runs) formed a crucial partnership with Virat Kohli (82 runs) as India reached the 100-run mark.

After the fall of Yuvraj, skipper MS Dhoni replaced him on the crease. The duo of Kohli and Dhoni formed a blistering partnership of 67 runs to get India past the winning the line.

Kohli was more of the aggressor between the two as he took on the Australian pacers. Thanks to his match winning knock, team India reached the semi-finals of 2016 T20 World Cup. The Indian maestro was also adjudged player of the match for his knock in a crunch India vs Australia T20 World Cup match.
