What do we know so far about MS Dhoni playing in IPL 2025?

MS Dhoni and IPL 2025 are both so well related to each other for now, hundreds of speculations. See what we have collected and what has happened till now in this case.

MS Dhoni, whose name alone is enough to draw spectators to the ground, is often associated with five IPL trophies and numerous ICC Silverware, representing the pinnacle of the game. However, there is uncertainty surrounding his future in IPL 2025.

If we focus on the upcoming edition, there is a possibility that we may see him participate after the IPL 2025 Auction Meeting, where CSK’s CEO presented several points that could be helpful in bringing back MS Dhoni. They are doing everything possible to ensure his return. So, what factors come into play regarding MS Dhoni’s participation in IPL 2025? Let’s see all the elements that have emerged, offering a glimmer of hope for fans.

MS Dhoni uncapped player in IPL

First key point emerged from that crucial meeting: CSK CEO Kasi Vishwanathan emphasized the importance of reinstating the uncapped player rule, that existed from 2008 to 2021. According to this rule, a player who has retired from international cricket for five or more years is classified as an uncapped player, which could allow MS Dhoni to return to the team.

This Consideration arises, as there are four major players who may be retained ahead of MS Dhoni are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesa Pathirana, and Shivam Dube. If this happens, CSK would desperately need that rule. However, if the rule is reinstated, there would be a financial loss for MS Dhoni, as the former captain, who earned INR 12 Crore in IPL 2022, would see a drop of 8 Crores, given that the maximum price for which an uncapped player could be retained is 4 Crores.

Now, when it comes to the IPL Retention Policy, there could be some positive developments. It has come to light that the BCCI might pass the Six-player-Retention-Rule. If this happens, there would be no need for the uncapped player designation, allowing CSK to easily retain MS Dhoni next season. According to the BCCI, it is also important to address minority concerns. However, other franchises are not particularly happy with the uncapped-player-rule. Nonetheless, if these changes occur, we may see MS Dhoni taking charge in a significant role.
