What could be MS Dhoni’s price if he gets retained as an uncapped player in IPL 2025?

The heart and soul of CSK and the 'life of many,' MS Dhoni, could possibly feature in IPL 2025 as an uncapped player. If he does, let's see how it will affect his IPL salary.

For many cricket fans, MS Dhoni has been the heart and soul of Chennai Super Kings. But will this star continue to represent CSK in the upcoming IPL 2025? The speculation is currently a hot topic, especially following recent reports about Dhoni’s participation in the next IPL. Dhoni’s potential participation is the most trending topic in sports media, with two key factors that could determine his availability: the IPL retention policy and, surprisingly, the possibility of him playing as an ‘uncapped’ player.

The second factor seems plausible, Thanks to CSK CEO Kasinath Viswanathan who recently requested the BCCI to reinstate the uncapped rule that existed from 2008 to 2021. This rule stated that a player retired from international cricket for five or more years would be classified as an uncapped player. Although the rule was scrapped after various franchises raised concerns, it appears it could be reintroduced, allowing Dhoni to play as an uncapped player. But what will happen to Dhoni’s finances, and how much will he earn if he plays with this uncapped tag?

How much could MS Dhoni lose in IPL earnings if he plays as uncapped player?

Now, coming back to MS Dhoni’s IPL salary, it could see a significant reduction if he is retained as an uncapped player. Under the current IPL retention rules, uncapped players can be retained for INR 4 crores, but not more. This means that Dhoni, who has been earning INR 12 crores from IPL 2022 onwards, would see his salary drop to INR 4 crores if retained as an uncapped player. This represents a drop of approximately 66.67%, equating to a loss of INR 8 crores.

Dhoni himself has mentioned that it will be interesting to see how things unfold for him in the next season, as the evaluation of the retention policy is conducted. Since there will be no command pressure on him this time, it might make things easier for the 43-year-old. However, will we see his iconic helicopter shot again, or not is the major topic now.
