West Indies rush to secure pace gem: Shamar Joseph earns new International contract

As Shamar Joseph continues his journey, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring cricketers, demonstrating the rewards of dedication and prioritizing national pride.

The West Indies cricket board has acted swiftly to secure their rising star, Shamar Joseph, amidst his meteoric rise and potential poaching from lucrative T20 leagues. Following his captivating debut Test series against Australia, where he claimed 13 wickets at an exceptional average of 17.3, Joseph has been rewarded with a prestigious upgrade – an international retainer contract.

This unprecedented move, announced on Friday morning, highlights the board’s proactive approach to retaining the 24-year-old speedster amidst strong interest from international T20 franchises. Shamar Joseph, ever loyal to his national team, expressed his unwavering commitment: “This is my dream, to play cricket for the West Indies. I will always be available to play Test cricket, no matter how much money comes towards me.”

Though initially slated to join the Dubai Capitals in the UAE after the Australia series, a toe injury forced Shamar Joseph to return to the Caribbean. His participation in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (Peshawar Zalmi) and the Indian Premier League (if selected) remains unaffected, as these schedules don’t clash with West Indies’ international commitments.

However, with the T20 World Cup in June and a three-Test series in England the following month, Joseph’s new contract stipulates his priority lies with national duty.

Enoch Lewis, director and chair of the cricket development and performance committee at CWI, emphasized the decision’s significance: “As exhilarated as we are, it is also dutiful to elevate Shamar Joseph to a CWI international retainer contract. His talent and dedication were instrumental in our Gabba triumph, and such promise merits its due recognition.”

Miles Bascombe, director of cricket at CWI, echoed the sentiment: “Shamar’s elevation reflects his potential and the bright future ahead for West Indies cricket.”

This timely gesture not only rewards Joseph’s remarkable debut but also sends a strong message: the West Indies are determined to nurture their best fast-bowling talent and build a formidable team for the future. With Chemar Holder also receiving a franchise contract, the board’s commitment to pace bowling is undeniable.

As Shamar Joseph continues his journey, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring cricketers, demonstrating the rewards of dedication and prioritizing national pride. The future of West Indies cricket seems to be in safe hands, with Shamar Joseph leading the charge with his raw talent and unwavering passion.
