West Indies legend and white-ball coach Daren Sammy has been given additional responsibility as he becomes the all-format coach of the West Indies cricket team now. The team announced his appointment as the Test team coach of the Caribbean side on Monday. Sammy has now replaced Andre Coley, who is currently coaching the team in Tests. The two-time T20 World Cup champion will be taking the reign from 1st April 2025.
The 40-year-old taken the role of West Indies’ white-ball head coach in 2023. As a player, Daren Sammy captained the team to two T20 World Cup victories in 2012 and 2016.
New role, new direction
Daren Sammy seems happy with the new role.“it’s an honour to represent the West Indies in any capacity and with the new role he has mapped out the new direction”. he said.
Westindies under Sammy in ODI and T20Is
Under Daren Sammy as head coach in white-ball cricket, the West Indies showed some good performances. In ODIs, the team played 28 matches, winning 15, losing 12, and tying 1, with a win/loss ratio of 1.250. Whereas, in T20Is, the Carrabians played 35 matches, securing 20 wins with a win/loss ratio of 1.428. Sammy’s guidance brought consistency and improvement to the team’s limited-overs cricket.
Darren Sammy as Test cricketer
Daren Sammy had a distinguished career in Test cricket, playing 38 matches for the West Indies. As a lower-order batsman, he scored 1,323 runs at an average of 21.68, with one century and five half-centuries, including a highest score of 106. Sammy also proved to be an important bowler, claiming 84 wickets in 65 innings with an average of 35.79 and a best bowling performance of 7/66.
Not just Westindies, the player has played Test cricket in different countries including Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka. His disciplined seam bowling and ability to deliver crucial breakthroughs made him a valuable asset to the West Indies team. Sammy’s all-around contributions in both batting and bowling were vital during his Test career.
