Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming on Friday said his team paid the price of putting up a below par score on the board against Sunrisers Hyderabad. CSK lost their second match of IPL 2024 when they faced SRH at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Chasing 166, SRH reached the target with almost two overs to spare.
What happened?
SRH won the toss and put CSK to bat first. Shivam Dube, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja all played small parts as CSK put up 165 runs in 20 overs. Chasing 166, SRH had a good start with openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head both scoring 30s before Aiden Markram slammed a half-century. Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy saw our the game with 11 balls to spare.
Credit to SRH bowling
Speaking at the post match press conference, Fleming credited SRH for bowling well in death overs in the first innings and said they were 10-15 runs short.
“The first 10 overs, I thought we were in the game. But credit to the way SRH bowled in the last 5 overs. In trying to get to 180=190, we ran aground. Probably in hindsight you knock some into the grounds but we still think it was possible to get to the score of 180-190. SRH really shut us down in the last 5 or 6 overs,” Fleming said.

“We were maybe 15 runs short. We knew the first 10 overs were going to be tough, so we had to be positive in our defence. I don’t Moeen Ali’s missed catch in the first over had a big bearing on the game although you would want your team to take every chance that comes along the way. We fought back very well. It was a tricky wicket to play on once you got the right pace to bowl,” Fleming added.
