Indian stalwart Yuvraj Singh thrashed England’s veteran Stuart Broad on this day (September 19th) in 2007. To note, the Southpaw smashed six sixes in one over during the 2007 T20 World Cup. As a result, Yuvraj wrote his name in the history books as he went on to become the first batter to achieve the feat in the 20-over format. To note, India were crowned as the champs of the tournament after defeating Pakistan in the final match.
Yuvraj stroked a fifty in just 12 deliveries against England
The incident happened during the 19th over of the innings. Before the 19th over, Yuvraj was seen having an animated chat with England’s senior all-rounder Andrew Flintoff moments before that seemed to have ignited the spark in Yuvraj. The first two balls from Broad went for maximums at the mid-wicket region. Yuvraj then followed the next sixes towards the extra cover and backward point region. The left-hander struck the penultimate delivery for six also over cow corner and smashed the final one over wide mid-on.
Thanks to Yuvraj’s effort with the bat, the left-handed batter completed his Fifty in just 12 balls as the Men in Blue went on to score a mammoth 218 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The Three Lions put up a valiant fight to chase down the total but fell short by 18 runs in the end.
Broad who recently retired from the international arena, revealed that he wished the incident hadn’t taken place. However, Broad credited the incident for making him the bowler he turned out to be. The retired cricketer elaborated:
“I started building my ‘warrior mode’ that I call it after that experience. Ultimately, I wish that didn’t happen. What really helped me that it was a dead rubber, so I didn’t feel like I’d knocked us out of the World Cup. But I think it steeled me up to make me the competitor I am to this day, and has driven me forward a huge amount. I’d rushed my preparation, I didn’t have any pre-ball routine, I didn’t have any focus.”
