Nadal had suffered a hip injury during his second-round defeat to Mackenzie McDonald at the 2023 Australian Open. He has been out of action since then and has dropped down to World No.663 in the rankings.

The long injury lay-off made Nadal announce that the upcoming season would be his last in the ATP Tour. He has since then underwent a arthroscopic surgery in August and has now recovered fully. He is currently training at the Rafael Nadal Academy and is expected to leave to Australia after Christmas.
