Bangladesh’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim got dismissed in bizarre fashion in the ongoing BAN vs NZ 2nd Test in Mirpur on Wednesday. The 36-year-old was given out for obstructing the field.
The incident happened in the 41st over of Bangladesh’s first innings. Batting on 35, Rahim defended a ball off Kyle Jamieson which bounced and came back into him. However, Rahim instinctively put out his right hand and handled the ball. As New Zealand players appealed, both the onfield umpires discussed and sent it upstairs. The third umpire then gave Mushfiqur out for ‘obstructing the field’ as he deemed that the batter stopped the ball deliberately.
The brain fade moment from the veteran cricketer earned himself the record of becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to be given out for obstructing the field.
Notably, this is the second incident on Wednesday where batter was seen having an embarassing moment on the field. Earlier today, ex-Pakistan skipper Babar Azam suffered a brain fade moment as he tried to stop Shan Masood’s straight drive with his glove while being at the non-striker’s end during Pakistan’s warm-up game against Prime Minister’s XI.
Talking about the ongoing Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand, the visitors are in the driving seat as they reduced the hosts to 123/6. Spinners Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner were the wreckers in chief with two wickets apiece.
Notably, Bangladesh are leading the two-match Test series by 1-0 after a comfortable 150-run win in the first Test.
