Have you ever seen a designated keeper take a sublime catch but not as a gloveman? You might have seen AB de Villiers do his magic, given he was a different beast altogether. But now, at the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy Australia vs England match, another keeper-batter did something outlandish on the field. Alex Carey, who usually keeps, took a splendid diving catch to dismiss Phil Salt in Lahore.
Watch Alex Carey’s splendid catch in AUS vs ENG ODI
Australia captain Steve Smith won the toss and elected to field first under the scorching heat in Lahore. As usual, English openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett tried to have a slog from the right go. Salt, in particular, was explosive as he hammered a four and a six in the first over. Then came Ben Dwarshuis, who bowled a full-length delivery to which Salt tried to hoick over the mid-on fielder. The fielder, credibly, was Alex Carey, who ran hard on his right and plucked the ball out of thin air to leave everyone stunned.
Notably, Jamie Smith also splashed one straight to Carey, who took another catch, this time a simple one, however. For those unaware, Carey has previously fielded thrice in ODIs. His splendid catch off Salt was Carey’s first-ever catch for Australia as a fielder.
