Watch: Ashutosh Sharma pays special tribute to Kevin Pietersen after match-winning knock in DC vs LSG

Ashutosh Sharma smashes a match-winning six and pays tribute to mentor Kevin Pietersen, leaving the DC dugout ecstatic in celebration.

Ashutosh Sharma, who was released by Punjab Kings last October, stole the show on this first match with the new franchise, Delhi Capitals on Monday night at DC vs LSG in IPL 2025. Coming as an impact player, he single-handedly won the match for the Delhi Capitals and left no room for regret among fans. He smashed 66 runs off 31 balls not out, hitting the six in the final over to seal the deal. During that, DC’s mentor and ex-player Kevin Peterson got really excited and couldn’t hold the excitement.

Heroic knock against LSG

Chasing a target of 210, Delhi Capitals were struggling at 65 for five with Faf du Plessis back in the pavilion. Ashutosh Sharma came and played really mature innings. With calm confidence, he led the charge, ensuring victory with three balls to spare by hitting a decisive six in Vizag. He scored 20 runs off 20 balls initially, but the other 41 runs came in just 11 balls from his bat. With 22 runs needed off the last two overs and just one wicket left, Ashutosh remained composed, hitting the winning shot in the final over.

Tribute to Kevin Pietersen

After sealing the win, Ashutosh dedicated his performance to Delhi’s new mentor, Kevin Pietersen. Celebrating with a ‘switch hit’ gesture, he pointed towards the dugout to grab Pietersen’s attention. The former England cricketer enjoyed the moment. He celebrated joyously with the team and congratulated Ashutosh personally.

Learning from the Past

Reflecting on his success, Ashutosh emphasised the importance of self-belief and learning from previous experiences. “I learned from the last year because there were a few games where I couldn’t finish the game,” he shared after receiving the Player of the Match award. “I have a lot of belief in myself that if I play till the last over and the last ball, anything can happen. You just have to stay calm, believe, and think about what shots you can play that you have practised, so that’s what I did today.”
