Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia’s white-ball team, disagrees with Rohit Sharma post-match comments that the World Test Championship final (WTC Final) should be played as a three-match series and that it should not be held one week after the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Aaron Finch opined that the three-match series to decide the WTC winner can be a ‘bit waste of time’.
“In a big event like this, you need to have fair opportunities to both the teams. You know, a three-match series would be nice, but it’s about finding that window where it can be fit in,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation after India succumbed to back-to-back defeats in the WTC final.
Finch rejects Sharma’s comments.
“I think it’s just the reality of the scheduling and the time constraints on fixtures at the moment,” he told sen.com.au.
“I’ve got no issues with it, I think if it’s drawn out over three Tests, what happens if a team gets annihilated? It becomes a bit of a waste of time.
“We all play sport for the wins and the losses… I don’t have any issue with it at all.”
Scott Boland, whose double-wicket over in the opening session of Day five gave Australia the victory, was also praised by Finch. The best of the Australian quicks, Boland finished the game with five wickets.
“He was outstanding, I think he’s well and truly sewn up that third quick spot in the first Test,” said Finch.
“I’m not sure of Josh Hazlewood’s injury return I guess, he’s had a couple of niggles that keep hanging around for him, so Scott Boland will definitely (play at Edgbaston).”
Rohit Sharma on why India lost
On the fifth day of a thrilling match at The Oval on Sunday, Australia secured a commanding 209-run victory, with India’s final seven wickets falling cheaply for just 70 runs.
After losing to New Zealand in 2021, it was India’s second straight defeat in the World Test Championship finals.
Rohit Sharma said his team lost the game on the first day of the match when first innings centurions Travis Head and Steve Smith started to get on top of his bowlers.
